Class III - IV Whitewater :: Easy to moderate :: Ages 6 +
High desert canyons :: 5-Day, 4-Night Trip :: Close to Seattle/Portland
The Upper Deschutes River trip from Mecca Flat Campground outside Warm Springs, Oregon, to the Sandy Beach take-out six and a half river miles downstream of the town of Maupin, Oregon, flows past columnar basalt cliffs and through the Mutton Mountain range. Campsites are plentiful with exceptional views, intriguing geologic formations, sturdily designed pit and composting toilets and dotted with junipers and Douglas firs. The 3-day river trip includes numerous rapids with the most notable being Whitehorse, Buckskin Mary, Wapinitia, Boxcar and Oak Springs. On the Upper Deschutes, you are introduced to the whitewater gradually until the exciting conclusion on the final day. The Class III whitewater is ideal for river enthusiasts of every age bracket. Hiking, fishing, swimming, floating the rapids and relaxing under a shadetree are all ingredients of a multi-day Upper Deschutes River trip. Campfires are possible from October 1st through June 1st and, when allowed, Orion guides will do the majority of the dinner meals using the kitchen component that helped to 'win the West' --- the Dutch Oven. From June 1st on, however, a fire ban is in effect, and our guides will create extraordinary meals over the stovetop.
