What you should know about Washington whitewater.
The most reliable months for memorable, fun, challenging whitewater on Washington’s free-flowing rivers are the months of May and June. In May and June, the spring mountain runoff of melting snow is underway and all of the rivers are brimming with water. April may have good water levels, but the air temperatures are on the chilly side. July’s weather is — typically — very nice, but river levels will depend on how much snow pack remains in the Cascades. Regardless, it will not be high water. August is unreliable, except on a dam-controlled river like the Deschutes or the Skagit. We often raft the Wenatchee River into early August but it will certainly be low water best suited for novices, kids and those who are whitewater-wary. Pick your best dates accordingly.
